Trinity has been ranked in the top 100 for life sciences in Times Higher Education subject rankings released today. This is the first time an Irish university has done so.

Trinity was ranked 87th in the world, and was the only Irish university in the top 100.

The Times Higher Education subject rankings compares subject areas in universities under certain performance indicators. Trinity scored the highest in the areas of international outlook and citations, and lowest in the area of research.

In a press release, Trinity’s Dean of Research, John Boland, welcomed Trinity’s success: “We are delighted that Trinity College Dublin continues to be recognised globally as Ireland’s premier university, competing at the highest international standards”. He added: “At the heart of the university is its teaching and the high scores for subjects areas such as Life Sciences are a real testament of the quality of a Trinity education for our students and the leading-edge research being conducted in this field”.

The University of Oxford was ranked 1st, with The University of Cambridge and Harvard University placing joint 2nd. Trinity was ranked just below Pierre and Marie Curie University, and just above Royal Holloway, University of London.

Despite having two universities, Stanford and California Institute of Technology (CalTech) in the top five, the United States suffered a diminished performance in the rankings, it being the first time an institution outside the US has taken first place. The US only had eleven universities in the top twenty, down two from the previous year.

As The University Times reported last week, Times Higher Education ranked Trinity 74th in the world for arts and humanities, again the first time an Irish university has been ranked in the top 100.

These successes however, come in the light of Trinity’s fall in overall university rankings. In September, Times Higher Education ranked Trinity 160th in the world, down from 138th in 2012, while the QS rankings placed Trinity at 78th, a fall of seven places from the previous year.
