The Chair of Trinity Publications, Clare McCarthy, has been removed from her position, after losing a vote of no confidence this evening.

The chair of Trinity Publications oversees the body of publications that includes Trinity News and literary journal Icarus. It is one of the five capitated bodies in College.

A person who is familiar with the circumstances leading to tonight’s vote said that McCarthy had been involved in the questioning of the accounts of a publication without the full committee’s knowledge, and that, when a committee member took issue with this, McCarthy threatened that committee member with legal action. They spoke on the condition of anonymity because the details were not widely known.

McCarthy, however, denied this account. In an email statement to The University Times, she said: “I did not threaten legal action. I have acted in accordance with the Constitution and my role as Chair. This is a gross injustice.”

McCarthy is the former Managing Editor of Trinity News and is a former Sports Editor. She also helped lead the campaign against the impeachment of Katie Ascough last month. McCarthy has also been involved in Trinity Vincent de Paul Society.

The executive committee of Trinity Publications is made up of six people, with the editors of each of the largest Trinity publications – including the Piranha, Trinity News and TN2 – also on the committee.

An earlier version of this article incorrectly ascribed a position in Trinity News to McCarthy. Though she is still listed on the Trinity News website as the newspaper’s Managing Editor, she resigned the position several weeks ago.
