The School of Medicine has agreed in principle to provide €250,000 to create a new student space in the Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute (TBSI).

The announcement of the new space was made by the President of Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union (TCDSU), Kevin Keane, at TCDSU council this evening. Speaking about the new space at TCDSU council this evening, he said that “this is a really positive development in and of itself” but added that “there is a lot more to be done”.

The agreement to provide the funding will be confirmed at a meeting with the School of Medicine tomorrow.

In an email to The University Times, Keane said that TCDSU is “delighted” to announce the project in TBSI. He said that he has been working on the project for some time. “I will be looking for as much feedback as possible from the students that will be using the space, to tell us what they really want to see included”, Keane added.

Keane thanked Michael Gill from the School of Medicine, saying he “has been been a great ally throughout the process”.

Responding to a question from Sally Anne McCarthy, TCDSU Science Convenor, on the fact that TBSI already has a student space, Keane said that the new space will be “bigger than anything we have to offer”.

Keane’s officer report explained that the new space would “transform that whole end of college”. Acknowledging it was an ambitious plan, it is hoped that more progress will be made in the new year.

In his officer report, Keane said that he will continue to work on his manifesto point that would see the Hamilton Library become a 24-hour space. “The Library is really positive about the project, and all going well it will result in over 200 new 24hr study spaces”, he added.
