A new academic year at Trinity is upon us!

For those of you new to Trinity College Dublin, I shall be your first port of call, your safe port in a storm, and the fox always up for a glass of port of any vintage (though I do favour a 1992 Taylor Fladgate).

If you have never heard of the Trinity Fox, shame on you! I have been around campus for more years than my roguish, russet good looks would let on. I have seen many students and staff-members pass through this beautiful campus. Perhaps you’ve caught a glimpse of me? Forgive me if you saw me late at night and I did not return your friendly wave – I tend to become enlivened after a night of rigorous discussion and Tokaji wine in the Provost’s garden, and walking in unbroken solitude around campus prepares me for sleep.

Now it is time for me to show you Dublin and Trinity done my way, and I will do so here every couple of weeks. As a fan of literature, the arts, fine food and drink, even finer clothing, and all forms of debate, I have much to impart.

My great-grandfather was one of the first foxes to attend Trinity. As a student, he was once caught sneaking into the cavernous wine cellar. This cellar lies quietly, secretly under Front Square, awaiting discovery from the intrepid few who have attempted entry. But more on that another time! A mischievous minx of a fox, my father passed his in-depth knowledge on to his cub, as my grandfather passed it onto my father.

So you see, there really is no one better to guide you through your time at Trinity. The places to go! The people to know! And I in turn want to hear where you are eating, reading, rabble-rousing and generally enjoying this fine city. Oh, what a time we shall have!

How I do go on. For now, let me wish you a hearty welcome: Welcome, new students, and welcome back to those of you returning! Let us band together as we pursue that mercurial siren: adventure.

Once more unto the breach, dear friends.

If you cannot wait to hear from the Trinity Fox again, follow him on Twitter: @TheTrinityFox and share your Trinity adventure.
