A new initiative which hopes to encourage entrepreneurship in undergraduates launched at Dublin Castle this morning.

Launched today, Student Slingshot is a new initiative that encourages students to engage with innovative ideas, and to approach the world of work with an entrepreneurial spirit. The event, which will launch in Dublin Castle on November 18th, will give students the opportunity to meet industry leaders and other front-running entrepreneurs from Ireland, the UK and Europe, and aims to provide students with a space to engage in discussion for ideas surrounding positive change.

Over 150 undergraduate students will be selected to be involved in the initiative, and will be selected through an application process on the website to take part. These students will also have the chances to teach 10-12 year olds in the Slingshot Academy at the National Museum in February.

Speaking to The University Times, Katie Mannion, Head of Marketing and Student Engagement, said that the project is “all about giving students the best opportunities, making the most out of your time at university, making connections, and being inspired. All the work on this event has been done by volunteer students. We have personally scouted some of the students who have been volunteering with us – we love talented students.”

Julie Sinnamon, CEO Enterprise Ireland, also said “Student and graduate entrepreneurship are at the heart of Enterprise Ireland’s strategy. We welcome this timely initiative and look forward to participating and learning from the entrepreneurial students at Slingshot 2014.”

Some of the most influential entrepreneurs will be speaking at the event, including Niall Harbison, the founder of Lovin’ Dublin.
