A group of Trinity students are currently seeking college funding in order to establish a Trinity Student Scientific Review, drawing inspiration from the Student Economics Review.

The journal, which will consist of twenty articles under the three main strands of scientific research, physics, biology and chemistry, is headed by a group of Junior Sophister students. They will be assisted in their establishment of the review by an Academic Steering Committee, who will ensure that the final drafts of the articles are written to a high standard, as well as a number of post-graduate students and other staff members who will assist in the editing and quality assurance process.

So far, the process has been assisted by Dr. Andrew Jackson and Dr. Natalie Cooper of the School of Zoology, Prof. Werner Blau of the School of Physics and Dr. Mike Southern of the School of Chesmitry.

Speaking to The University Times, Physics Editor Dylan Scully stated “across all the fields of science, this review journal can offer the college an excellent showcase of our strong undergraduate academic talent and the research ethos that underlies all study completed here at Trinity.”

Completed reviews will be submitted to the team, who will then produce a shortlist of ten articles, to be submitted to the Academic Steering Committee – these will then be narrowed down to five chosen articles, which will be published in the review. There will also be spaces reserved in the journal for the best freshman, best junior sophister and best overall article.

Daniel McDermott, Biology editor, further added “this idea will provide a platform that can be built upon in successive years to make it an integral part of the entire scientific faculty. It will be an attraction to students considering Trinity for their undergraduate studies while cementing our position as a world leader in providing opportunities to those studying our undergraduate science degree.”

The team hope that the first issue of the Trinity Student Scientific Review will be published in March 2015, and plans are in place to expand the review to encompass the Schools of Maths, Engineering and Earth Sciences for later issues.
